Angelo will discuss two of his most acclaimed projects - Punchbowl Mosque and The Porter House Hotel and The Castle Residences tracking the process in each project from beginning to end, including sketches, construction shots, material selections, planning considerations and final photography.
Angelo Candalepas graduated from the University of Technology, Sydney in 1992. In 1994, in the first months of practice, he won an international architecture competition for housing for “The Point”, Pyrmont. The project was the recipient of several accolades. Since establishing Candalepas Associates in 1999, Angelo has won and been shortlisted for several national and international competitions, including the National Gallery of Victoria Contemporary project, soon to be Australia’s largest gallery dedicated to contemporary art and design.
Under Angelo’s leadership, the company has received a significant number of awards, including the Royal Institute of British Architects International Award for Excellence for the design of Punchbowl Mosque, and the Greenway Award for Heritage Architecture for The Porter House Hotel in 2024.
Other honours include the Sir John Sulman Medal for Public Architecture in 2009 and 2018, the Frederick Romberg Award for Residential Architecture – Multiple Housing in 2011, the Harry Seidler Award for Commercial Architecture in 2016, and the Aaron Bolot Award for Residential Architecture – Multiple Housing in 2011, 2013, 2017 and 2019.
In 2016, Angelo was awarded the NSW Premier’s Prize for Architecture. The firm’s work has been, and continues to be, published globally in prestigious journals, magazines, and international books
